National Collegiate Athletics Association:

Name Image Likeness Convention

Throughout the history of college sports, athletes were not allowed to benefit financially from their fame. This included endorsement deals, jersey sales, autographs, guest appearances, building a brand relating to your name (including making money from social media), and any other form of payment or monetary compensation related to your status as a college athlete/celebrity. In 2021, this rule completely changed college athletics, especially college football. Many impacts, both positive and negative, have already been felt, but without a precedent to go off of, many believe rules and regulations are needed to stop NILs from “ruining” college sports and athletes alike. For that reason, this meeting has been called to discuss the future of NILs and college athletics, if any.
